Muscular Dystrophy Association Venture Philanthropy (MVP) is a new MDA initiative that launched in January 2009, exclusively focused on the funding and commercialization of treatments and cures for neuromuscular diseases. MVP has its own Board of Directors that works in tight coordination with MDA.
MVP is an evolution of MDA’s Translational Research Program, which launched in 2004. Building on the solid foundation of MDA’s basic research, which is responsible for history’s most significant advancements in the understanding of neuromuscular diseases, the Translational Research Program has seen great success in speeding the progress of promising drugs from the lab into clinical trials. Now MVP will leverage these gains and its relationships with key industry partners to further refine and hasten the process of turning research into treatments.
With a charge to keep its operations strategic, accountable and sustainable, MVP aims to:
- Leverage MDA’s investment to date of over $1 billion in science, manpower and infrastructure.
- Make strategic investments in therapeutics with promising paths to market.
- Conduct professional due diligence in evaluating investment opportunities.
- Work with donors to target major gifts to specific disease areas and engage donors directly.
- Seek to grow its assets through a return on investment strategy.
- Measure its impact in objective and definable terms.
